FIREFIGHTER
CANCER SCREENINGS

The New York State Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery is excited to announce its SPOT skin cancer screening program for New York's firefighters!

Free screenings are done by board certified Dermatologists at local firehouses where it is quick and convenient for firefighters to participate. If there is any follow up required, firefighters will be referred to a local Dermatologist for care. If you are interested in hosting a screening at your firehouse, please contact us.

Firefighters have much higher rates of cancer than the residents they serve. This is due to carcinogen exposure:

  • on the fireground. Especially in fires where plastics and synthetics release harmful gases;

  • and in the firehouse from diesel exhaust and residual soot.

Firefighters can unknowingly pass carcinogens on to their fellow firefighters and loved ones. Find more information about prevention and care in the links below.
